Wind Energy
The exploitation by man of renewable energy sources including wind power is very old. For many centuries before our era, renewable, natural resources were used and their use continued throughout history until the advent of the Industrial Revolution.
In recent years, due to fuel costs and increasing awareness of the environmental impact of fossil fuels there is a great deal of research and investment so that we can finally be free from oil dependence.
Wind energy is safe and a completely renewable source, wind energy produces no emissions and is a limitless resource. A single, one megawatt (1 MW) Wind Turbine that works for a year can replace the emissions of more than 1,500 tons of carbon dioxide, 6.5 tons of sulfur dioxide, 3.2 tons of nitrogen oxide and 60 pounds of mercury . The facilities are mobile so if necessary their dismantlement is fairly straight –forward and the Wind Energy industry is creating many jobs.
How does Wind Power Work?
The Sun is the source of most renewable energy; the sun radiates 174,423,000,000,000energy kph per hour toward Earth. About 1 to 2 percent of energy from the sun is converted into wind energy. The solar radiation absorbed by the atmosphere results in air masses with different temperatures and therefore different densities and pressures. The air travels from high to low pressures; this wind is captured by wind turbines. The wind moves the propellers and through a mechanical system rotates the rotor of a generator, typically an alternator, which produces electricity.
Concentrations of Wind Turbines are usually grouped into so-called wind farms. The electricity produced by wind turbines is collected, measured and prepared for distribution through which power companies buy energy providing their customers with cleaner energy.
